An open letter to our newly minted
President. thayagam featured-president Dear Mr.President, It looks like an open season in Sri Lanka for presidents, past and present. There are gunmen and penmen (Shall I say, gunpersons and penpersons!) on the hunt for presidents. Those who lived by the sword should have known better. And those in the pursuit should better know now. But what’s wrong with the penpersons? You are flooded with open letters from everywhere. Santa wouldn’t get this many letters pre-christmas, ever. Yes, It was your fault. You opened the floodgate. You called on dissidents and intellectuals to come back. So instead of jumping and swimming to the shores of our motherland, they are testing the waters, with their open letters. I belong to neither. But we, Tamils, too have the tradition of open letters. I have seen open letters written by Tamil political analysts, who are dime a dozen in diaspora. They write open letters to whoever they think hurt their feelings. Be it UN Secretery General or just another political analyst who questioned the wisdom of their leader in choosing poisonous Gloriousa Superba as the national flower. The letters would contain open challenges, veiled threats and the obligatory ‘Our great national leader maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters’. we are known for our anonymous letters, called moddai, which spills out the family secrets to the relevant parties which might result in murder or to a higher authority about a junior level employee, which harmlessly results in transfer to Mahiyangana or Mannar. And they make sure they write it in Tamil, clearly knowing that their intended recipient can’t differentiate Tamil from Sinhala. Their targets are simply, to be in good books of, the leadership in Wanni and the tiger-supporters in diaspora, both of who couldn’t benefit from a letter written in English unless they can summon the services of a theoritician. Unfortunately, theoriticians were in limited supply, not on sale for dime a dozen. Also, we are known for our anonymous letters, called moddai, which spills out the family secrets to the relevant parties which might result in murder or to a higher authority about a junior level employee, which harmlessly results in transfer to Mahiyangana or Mannar. If you ever want to be enlightened about our great tradition of letter writing, open or anonymous, you can always find nirvana with Mr.V.Anandasangaree. He is the Grand ole Zen Master of the art of open-letter writing. So, Looking at the numbers and letters themselves, I find it is not just limited to intellectuals. It looks like it is a national duty for every person of Sri Lankan origin to write an open letter to the new president. So here I am. I wish I can write my letter in Sinhala, even though you don’t need a theoretician. Thanks to the Catholic Church with forethought and a sinhala teacher who couldn’t speak Tamil well, in four years, I was only able to read and write fluently, though I don’t understand a single word. For self-defence and romantic purposes, I made sure I learnt two sentences. One is for ‘I love you’. (Well, I was a desperate teenager then. And my futile attempt for national unity.), the other is ‘Gaanda Eppa’, which might help not only after saying the first one, also when traveling South as a Tamil. My wife speaks sinahala so fluently that astonishes even her sinhala friends. But she can’t write like I can. Speaking of my significant other, my in-laws are head over heals with you. My in-laws claim you visited their family in Digana, in early eighties, to see their father, when someone falsely claimed he was dead. Being a gentleman, you came with wreath and rice. He seemed to be loyal to whatever doctrine you belonged at that time and spoke at rallies attended by you. Or you might have met him at Kundasale. (See now we are getting closer!) Those who threw their support behind you, didn’t do it in order to save our mother Lanka from tyranny. You may have noticed that I addressed you Mr.President. Remnants of colonialism still demand us to be Her Majesty’s loyal subjects and say His Excellency. As I am in North America for a while, we have Mr.Presidents and Mr.Prime Ministers, Not His Excellencies. Working for a multi-billion dollar company, as a bottom level employee, I had my encounters with the CEO, with whom my conversation is simply first name basis. That is unthinkable in our country where respect and salutation are demanded, not earned. But Mr.President, be wary of those around you, saying “Who does this know-it-all bloody bugger think he is? Your Excellency” Not a full moon ago, they were saying praises to the president. No, not to you. To the previous one. They always say the same thing, though Presidents change. See how fast they changed their allegiances. It wouldn’t take them too long to hang you out to dry. They will leave you faster than fleas on a dead dog. A leader has to be like leveria, nutritious sweetness inside surrounded by smart people who can help him solve complex problems, not like a vadai, a hole surrounded by… suck up manipulators. This should be the ‘lesson learnt’ without an appointed commission. I can draw examples from both sides of the ethnic conflict, from Premadasa to Prabhaharan who didn’t learn that to their sad demise. Looking at your cabinet and those jumped into the bandwagon after the polls, I am sure you have no shortage for them. You will have more than enough ‘Yes, Mr.President’. Or ‘Yes, Your Excellency’. You might wonder, what are you supposed to do with the suggestions, recommendations and requests thrown at you by the intellectuals? Dealing with intellectuals is easy as they live in their own idealistic world. They don’t expect anything in return other than recognition of their, what else, intellect. Some shrewd ones may ask for Ambassadorship or Advisorship. Mr.President, Wait until you have to come to consensus on anything, with your ‘coalition of the willing’. Dealing with intellectuals will look like a piece of cake then. Those who threw their support behind you, didn’t do it in order to save our mother Lanka from tyranny. Their support was conditional and done with expectation of multiple repayments with astronomical interest rates, like my credit card bills. They are prospectors who go to wherever they can mine money. Politicians, unlike intellectuals, live in a materialistic world. They don’t want anything other than accumulating, what else, material wealth, from ‘lephants to Lambos. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I was born in North to an agrarian family, like yours. (Another side story… When my sinhala teacher, left for good to A’pura, she got me buy her small onions from my village, for which, besides potatoes, it is famous for. Being late, as usual, thanks to our CTB’s excellent service, I was carrying that smelling bag to the amusement of my fellow travelers. Having not seen me for a while, she was worried that I ran away with her money, or podi raththa loonu.) In our family, we were taught to see the next person as a human being, not one with label. Hatred wasn’t fed with our mother’s milk. So we had many good sinhala friends. One of whom, Banda Nilame Annai, was a co-worker to my brother. He used to write in Jaffna Daily, Ealanadu, on Poya days about Buddhism. I used to visit his parents in Jaffna. They lived there for more than 30 years and fluent in Tamil. We are still part of Banda annai’s family. My sisters were in Galle, Kalutura and Wellampittiya. I visited Kalutura with my sister, where she was teaching. I still have fond memories and funny stories to share. Many of my siblings are fluent in Sinhala. Simply put, I am not your typical ‘hangin’-by-the-tail’ tamil. If you promise not to roll on the floor laughing, I can humbly call myself as a prophet who has no honor in his own country. I left the country to 30 years ago, never to set my foot there again. I never wanted to be felt like a stranger in my own country. Besides, a gun-toting tiger wouldn’t understand ‘Gaanda eppa’. According to my detractors in diaspora, I am supposed to be on the payroll of consecutive sinhalese governments from Premadasa to Mahinda. I wish it were true. With that quarter century years of payments, and my knowledge of stock market here, I would have been rich beyond imagination, well, at least richer than Medamulana dynasty. For certain, I wouldn’t be selling Pathola and Gotu kola plants to Sri Lankan backyard gardeners, here in Canada, to bolster my income to make a decent living. Sooner or later, the very people who called on their fellow northeast Tamils to vote for you and made you president, when I write about the social ills in Tamil society, will say that I am in YOUR payroll. You can categorically deny it, though my detractors won’t believe it. But my Sinhala brothers might believe your word and it might help me sell more karawila and karapincha plants. I have been writing for long about the futility of the war and the destruction it will lead to. Those who didn’t listen did at their own peril. Five years ago, I wrote about the demise of Mahinda empire, the way it happened now. So, If you promise not to roll on the floor laughing, I can humbly call myself as a prophet who has no honor in his own country. Enough bragging. let’s get to the matter. You are the best thing ever happened to Sri Lanka. Suddenly I hear everywhere. Yeah, right. I have heard that story before. Same was said about Chandrika and Mahinda. And here we are. Back to the square one. Given the past experience, I didn’t have much expectation to begin with. But a few things struck me as rays of hope. When it comes to Sri Lankan leaders, some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have thrust themselves upon greatness. Last variety, like Prabhaharan, Premadasa, Lalith, Gamini et al, tried to thrust themselves upon greatness by dubious means and their ends couldn’t justify their means. In a sense, you and D.B.Wijetunge, are the ones who had greatness thrust upon them. You didn’t seek power, but Time brought you there to lead. Or you were there at the right place at the right time. Like the Tamil kings chosen with the garland from the temple elephant. Oh, here we go again. It is not that a new sheriff is in town. It is just another politician in Sri Lanka, with a matching son to boot. And when I read that as a young man you were affiliated with Late Shanmugathasan, I thought we are into something. In an age, when power, fame and fortune had to be in mind, someone thinking of the betterment of society is remarkable. You said you wouldn’t seek presidency second time. Here is a man, who doesn’t have thirst for power. How refreshing! Yes, you were on the ladder to the power. Yes, Power corrupts as we have seen in front of our eyes absolute power corrupting absolutely. By the way, who would have thought our Champion of Human Rights could turn into a monster? So I know you wouldn’t be immune to that illness. You will have your own share of skeletons in the closet. That’s OK. I don’t mind. But all my tiny hopes crashed down when I heard reports about your picks for inner circle and the antics of your son. Oh, here we go again. It is not that a new sheriff is in town. It is just another politician in Sri Lanka, with a matching son to boot. After the briefings from Defence, Intelligence and New Delhi, not to mention US embassy in Colombo, there isn’t much to be changed. I know very well that it will be business as usual, except for the one with China. Those who wanted blood might be disappointed. It is not going to be like revoking Srima’s civil rights by JR. Public wouldn’t have appetite for blood. Witch-hunt might backfire to make Mahinda a martyr. Corruption will be there, though level of the greediness wouldn’t be like the one shown recently. There would be no dragging of Gotha as he did to the General to “Get him”. Those who seek revenge better be careful as they do have their own skeletons. And they aren’t saints either. Many had those proverbial files on their name and they wouldn’t be interested in archaeology. You wouldn’t bother about war crimes, as you as Defence Minister in the last lap and the General beside you are partners in crime, not just by association, but by proud participation as well. Well, they have diplomatic terms for that… National interests. Inquiries about corruption would find the same fate. You were part of it until the last minute, weren’t you? And you will get support from unexpected quarters due to that. Corruption will be there, though level of the greediness wouldn’t be like the one shown recently. About changing the constitution to restore parliament democracy and abolish executive presidency, I am not holding my breath either. As what happened to Mugabe, quitting is not an option when there are other parties whose interests are also at stake. Collective interest comes first. It is not to be decided by one man alone. You can always talk about the ills of Executive Presidency when you are in opposition… until you get to power. Changing the constitution also might call for abolition of proportional representation. As you are depending on the support from those who benefited most from it, good luck with all your efforts to change the status quo. I can see those two waiting in the wings salivating to get their hands in power. They might even believe the victory is theirs, not yours. They may think of you as General who won the war, not a capable statesman. You are supposed to hand the power over to them and walk away to the sunset. People voted to make change. Any change. They did it without any Obama-esque Hope. ‘What else can get worse’ type of hope. All of you thinking that you won the election are fooling yourselves. It wasn’t a contest between two contenders. It is just a referendum on one’s rule. People voted to make change. Any change. They did it without any Obama-esque Hope. ‘What else can get worse’ type of hope. After all, it is not a landslide victory. (Not a good term to use in a country where innocent lives are lost due to them). You can’t claim to have a mandate to change everything as it is a nail-biting narrow victory. So don’t let the myth get into your head. Enjoy the honeymoon or first 100 days, whichever ends first. Once called the parliamentary election, you will know what the mess you are in. When you see the deal making, jockeying, back stabbing etc, you might want to declare martial law to bring peace… in the parliament. It will be deadlier than a tribal war erupting in a wedding tent in Kabul. Friends becoming enemies overnight, enemies becoming bedfellows, you might even summon Mahinda for his wisdom, and support. Technically you will be campaigning against your own prime minister. (making me wonder where Mangala will end up.) So, basically you will find yourself in the same mess, wondering whether to exploit it to your own benefit by playing politics. Mr.President, how can I avoid talking about the elephant in the room? Much dreaded ethnic question. For many, there is no question at all. The war is won. Problem solved. You wish, Mr.President! Isn’t it ironic that you are washing your hands on the very people who made you President. Who can blame you? You didn’t promise them anything. Technically, you said everything that is against their wishes. Still they voted. You have to say what the majority wants to hear. And people around you who have hatred in their hearts, wouldn’t let you. You didn’t even talk about the thing diaspora cherishes most… war crimes tribunal. Still they persuaded their brethren to back you. You didn’t sign any deal with TNA. Still they convinced the voters to elect you. You are not responsible for their blind trust. You don’t owe them anything. I can’t blame you either. Who wants to do political suicide(-bombing) by suggesting he will give rights to minorities. The other side might have easily exploited it to their own benefit. “He is selling out our motherland”. You have to say what the majority wants to hear. And people around you who have hatred in their hearts, wouldn’t let you. Ethnic question used to be about Tamils. Not anymore. Now it includes Muslims. And they have their grievances, which you don’t want to address, in the fear of antagonizing the majority. So don’t bother winning their hearts and minds. Sure, there will be cosmetic changes that will help TNA to save face. Hardliners will accuse you of appeasing to TNA. TNA as usual, will blame everything on government. They are very much used to being on the fence and blaming everybody else for their predicament. But intelligence would advice you of the imminent terrorist threat. So military will be in North East. Land in the High security zones will be in military control. Of course, you still have to enlist the services of KP, Karuna, Pillayan et al to counter the tiger threat. Once the parliamentary elections are on, TNA aligning itself with UNP in accordance with tradition, you have no choice but to bring Douglas into the fold.(Known devil! Right?) So in North and East, nothing will change. Well, Mr.President, History being teacher, you will come back to the same spot again. Six years, twelve years, or ten years, if you consult an astrologer. Or you just want a parliament with SLFP majority. Then you might need the vote of the minorities to get to or stay in power. At that time you will be at the mercy of them and they have shown you now that they don’t care who your opponent is, when they just want to get rid of you. You were unknown to many of them only a while ago. They still voted without knowing who you are. They are not obliged to vote for you again. Being a Tamil, I know, Tamils are more comfortable with UNP. TNA will find UNP as a weak entity, thanks to the never-Strongman Ranil, that can be easily dealt. Seeing no War Crimes inquiries, diaspora will push for a UNP government. So you will be at the mercy of Tamils. Not long ago, you were also a part of an iron-fisted regime. You know very well that on many issues you had to go with the flow, though in your conscience you might have questioned them. You might have seen colleagues, who trampled each other to praise the president. You, too, can win their hearts, one step at a time. I can’t speak for my Muslim brothers. I can tell you how you can try to win Tamils. As I said before, when I was studying Sinhala at school, Catholic Church wasn’t into Tamil nationalism then, but it had to ride along later. They decided to teach Sinhala to us, thinking it would create harmony. There was a priest who was there as Vice Rector, went on to become Rector. Then he went to Vanni and ended up with tigers. It is Rev.Fr.Francis Michael Joseph. He is one of those who surrendered in the last stage. Whereabouts of him are unknown. He was with other tiger detainees whose fate is unknown still now. If you really want to win the hearts and minds, you can release him and detainees like, Baby Subramaniam, Karikalan, Ilanthirayan, Yogi, Puthuvai Rathinathurai and other detainees, accused of being tigers. If they are not alive, you can bring closure to their loved ones. There may be outcries about releasing the tigers to the wild. Why on earth, of all people, my friends would ask, I could ask for such? Well, I always speak for the ones, forgotten by their own. I care for the living, not exploit the dead. I can assure you they are neither capable nor can they convince other Tamils to resurrect tigers. You might wonder why diaspora doesn’t bother about the detainees. Simply because they wanted them to be martyrs, biting cyanide capsules, not a disgrace to them, carrying white flag. Even if they come back they will end up like Thaya master and all. In diaspora’s eyes they will always be traitors. That’s why they couldn’t stomach the possibility of their leader surrendering with white flag. So they are holding on to the myth of him living somewhere. (May be with Elvis!) We all know, how many hardcore tigers escaped from custody by bribing you-know-whom. You all know how many of them are collaborating with military intelligence. If JR could release Wijeweera, while revoking Srima’s civil rights and now JVP and Karuna can sit in cabinet, these detainees can be released as well. If someone who went to prison for involvement with JVP, can become a President, need I say more? Not long ago, you were also a part of an iron-fisted regime. You know very well that on many issues you had to go with the flow, though in your conscience you might have questioned them. You might have seen colleagues, who trampled each other to praise the president. As a student in Russia, you might have even heard the joke about the first politburo meeting presided by Nikita Khrushchev, after Stalin’s death. No one dares speaking against the man who holds the gun. When their Great Leader wakes up one day and utter ‘Let’s kill Sri Lankan President’, what choice they had other than cheering ‘yay’? They were part of the regime, but couldn’t be held responsible for decisions made by a mad man. You can start wining the hearts and minds of Tamils by releasing them. Mr.President, You have a historic opportunity that was presented to no other. You are under no obligation to hand over the power to anyone who are way past the political expiry dates. You can win the hearts and mind of the whole nation. Even if it takes two terms. Go for it. You can stay above the petty party politics and make history. You can bring civility and decency to Sri Lankan politics. Mr.President, Fish rot from the head. So does a regime. Corruption starts from top. When a President has clean hands, an officer manning the government office wouldn’t dare to demand money from a widow. Above all, you should keep stability. With shameful infighting, untamed ethnic hatred and deteriorating economy, people might long for stability. We have seen it in Russia, Yugoslavia, Iraq and everywhere else. People who hated the dictators started longing for them. Mr.President, Fish rot from the head. So does a regime. Corruption starts from top. The power might get into your head. All omnipotent rulers, from Srima to Mahinda, had arrogant pride before fall, only to be humiliated by their successors. Remember it can happen to you too. With the stories of foreign intervention in elections, suddenly Mahinda might emerge as defender of Sri Lankan sovereignty. Remember, Mr.President, public has short memory. You can prove that you are the best thing ever happened to Sri Lanka. You can be a statesman who treats all his citizens equal and brings prosperity to them. Or just another despot who rob and destroy the country, only to be humiliated and kicked out at the end. The choice is yours, Mr.President! (In an unlikely event of using the services of a prophet, sorry, I don’t do astrology, and want to reach me, you know how to get me. Oh, no, not in Gotha’s sense of ‘Get him!’) By George R.Ckrhushchev |
