J/Hindu College in Jaffna Goes for English Medium with Best Results

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has paid special attention to upgrade quality of education of the Northern Province under the Northern Spring (Uthuru Wasanthaya) program, says Northern Province Governor Major General (retired) G A Chandrasiri.

The Northern Province Governor made these observations at a function held at the Hindu College in Jaffna yesterday (September 19) to lay down the foundation stone for a three storied building for the school. An educational exhibition had also been organized at the school concurrently with the foundation laying ceremony.

Sri Lankan government has allocated a sum of Rs 9.5 million for the proposed building and the Education Ministry has joined with the Uthuru Wasnthaya team to supervise the project. The Governor Chandrasiri also revealed that the government has allocated Rs. 58.44 million for a total of 79 development projects identified in the Jaffna district.

Jaffna has five educational zones and the Northern Spring program has arranged 310 projects at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 million.

The Hindu College in Jaffna had been started in 1890 and by today the school conducts classes in both Tamil and English medium. The College Principal P.Ganesh addressing the function said that due to the LTTE terror activities the school had to be closed for a period of two months in 2006 and other than that school was functioning smoothly.

He also added that 200 students sat for the GCE Ordinary Level examination last year and all they are all qualified for the GCE Advanced Level. Fifty students out of 200 had done the examination in English medium.

He further added that t he college is also preparing another 36 students to sit for the GCE Advanced Level examination in English medium in 2011. Out of them, 24 students will face Mathematics stream and other 12 are preparing to sit for the Bio-Science stream.
