Battling the LTTE mouthpiece

My debate on OMINI TV with LTTE spokesman David Pooplapillai was considered the first occasion when a Sri Lankan diplomat took on the LTTE in Canada face to face. The programme was moderated by Angie Seth respected TV anchor who understood South Asia well. Pooplapillai came with another active LTTE backer, Manjula Selvarrajah. I had invited an Indian friend of mine Juhi to baffle them. Juhi knew all about the Sri Lankan situation. She understood Sri Lanka very well and was sympathetic towards the country. She was careful in not letting her guard down and faced their questions behind the scene very well since Manjula Selvarajah tried to ‘grill’ her in her own way. The LTTE in Canada was always suspicious of Indians. I am not surprised that the Indian government had tightened its visa regulations to Canadian Sri Lankans traveling to India.
We did exchange pleasantries minutes before the live TV discussion though we knew we did not like each other. I was serving my country and David was serving a terrorist organisation that killed innocent people using suicide bombers.
Opening the debate as the new Consul General in Canada , I told Canada that I was not the Consul General for one community but for all Sri Lankans living in Canada and that I was against divisive methods and that Sinhalese and Tamils even shared the same new year with so much in common between us and our Culture. I am sure it pained the excellent moderator of the programme Angie Seth when I mentioned that the ruthless LTTE killed former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. I described the LTTE as misguided group which practised terrorism.
Angie Seth questioned Poopalapillai on the fundraising carried out by the LTTE front organisations in Canada. I explained to the Canadian viewers on how LTTE leader Prabhakaran had sent a letter to all front organisations in Canada to raise funds and those funds were used to kill innocent people in Sri Lanka. Respected National Post Journalist Stewart Bell in his book ‘COLD TERROR- How Canada nurtures and exports terrorism around the world’ has dedicated several pages to LTTE activities in Canada, mainly Toronto.
I asked Pooplapillai pointed out that the LTTE front orgainsations had even challenged the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) keeping a close tab on LTTE activities in Canada. OMINI discussion was useful to explain to the Canadian people how innocent Sri Lankan Tamils were been harassed in Canada and how LTTE fronts were trying to brainwash them. I had first hand information including from some of my personal friends from college that they were pretending to be Indians to escape the harassment from the LTTE fronts in Canada.
On live Television I questioned Pooplapillai how much funds he had collected for the LTTE terrorists in Canada. Taken aback by the question a struggling Pooplapillai said he hadn't collected money for the LTTE.
Pooplapillai , the terrorist spokesperson in Toronto or the ‘innocent’ face of Sri Lankan terrorism in Canada kept on talking of the virtues of Canada his adopted country whilst practising terror tactics and arm twisting people on Canadian soil. He proudly said the Tamils all over the world looked up to LTTE as their saviour and used the favourite word of the LTTE groups at the time, ‘genocide’ to discredit Sri Lanka.
It was only the day before our TV discussion that a democratic and an innocent Sri Lankan Tamil lady lawyer had been gunned down by the LTTE in the North. I invited Poopalapillai to visit Sri Lanka instead of making unsubstantiated allegations.
David didn't want to stay longer after the TV discussion. He said he was in a hurry. I jokingly asked him whether I could contribute one dollar to his cause. Obviously, he was in no mood for jokes and left in a huff.
It was definitely the first time I met the LTTE spokesman face to face. I have never seen him in person thereafter. I thought he avoided me except on one occasion. It was the John Oakely show where we both were questioned by John. Pooplapillai in his usual violent and boorish style kept on saying that the Sri Lankan Consul General had to be sent back to his country and that I was representing a criminal government. Having explained the exact situation in Sri Lanka, I played the trump card I had with the valuable information provided by the Sri Lankan Tamil Canadians living in Toronto.
I said that Pooplapillai was a human smuggler and he was charging large sums of money from innocent Tamils and smuggling them to Canada. Poopalapillai erupted like a volcano but struggled too. He kept on saying John that it was all lies. He even threatened to sue me. Facts are stubborn and they had to be revealed. I am sure John Oakely knew the truth and he was no supporter of terrorism in his country.
That was the end of the radio interview. My phone at the Consulate Generals office rang continuously. Most of the callers were Sri Lankan Tamil Canadians who had given me the correct information about the Mouthpiece of the LTTE in Canada. They were laughing because the true face of the LTTE had been exposed publicly.
